Almost everything that happens in our lives involves communication in one form or another. Effective communication not only involves conveying ideas and opinions, but also includes the ability to absorb and listen to what another person is saying. Whether you are involved in a business meeting or a relationship discussion, communication is the most essential component of any interpersonal relationship.
Like any other University students, I strive for success in career. In business, being able to communicate effectively can mean the whole difference between success and failure. Unfortunately, effective communication does not often come easily. Here is an example of one:
Which of the following phrases would you prefer to hear?
- A condescending tone: "You forgot to answer my e-mail again! I need an answer in two days! Geeze, what good are you?"
- A normal tone: "I know you're busy, but could you please remember to answer my e-mail about Project A by Friday? Thanks."
- a scared tone: "I really hate to impose, but I was wondering if you could possibly look at my email and send me a reply when you get a chance?"
Communicating effectively with my loved ones, family members and friends is just equally important. In daily life, communication with loved ones, family and closed friends are often neglected or not well taken care of. This may further damage a relationship.
Effective communication with the loved ones, on the other hand allows me to understand people better and be understood by them.
So what? Mutual understanding leads to better connection with people
So what? Better connection with people satisfy the need for belonging
So what? Fulfilling this important need certainly leads to a more satisfying life.
I could see from your blog that you respect your close friends and relatives and their relationships. And you like to be friendly and damn nice to everyone around you through communication. That is a very good attitude. Even though each paragraph has different areas of speech it ultimately ends up in showing this character of yours. You have taken good effort to get examples to explain the tone of the communication. When you described your personal opinion on the topic I think you could have concentrated more in professional areas. Because you emphasized the importance of communication in bonding relationships only. The language in the blog is clear and simple. So that makes your blog feel light and good. On the whole good effort from your side and I hope I could see much better blogs from you in the future.
ReplyDeleteGood job to Linh in highlighting the importance of a precise two-way communication in any interpersonal relationship. It is indeed very true that one must ensure that her message is delivered in an accurate and clear manner for the receiver to correctly interpret the meaning/idea as originally intended. I like your use of the above examples as they are very handy in illustrating the concept that tone could make a huge difference to how readers perceive you as a person and eventually whether they are still keen on communicating with such a character!
ReplyDeleteRegarding the part on communicating with loved ones, family members and close friends, perhaps you could elaborate more on why communication with them are often neglected or not well taken care of in our daily lives which results in further damage. In my personal opinion, it is probably attributed to this globally competitive society, where school and work life are so hectic that we do not have the luxury of spending a lot of time with this group of people close to our heart. Therefore, our busy schedule may be the culprit hindering us from having the opportunity to even communicate despite possessing the ability to communicating effectively with this group of people close to our heart?
Overall, good effort by Linh in balancing importance of effective communication in both the workplace and with closed ones in creating a fulfilling life!
Hey Linh,
ReplyDeleteYour blog post/response to the question is pretty straightforward and easily understood.I agree with you that effective communication is essential in every aspect of our life as it is important to get our 'true' ideas across. I like the example that you gave on how the same message can be expressed in different ways. And how different ways of expressing the same message can be interpreted differently or give a particular impression of the sender. Therefore, it is good to always think twice about what we are going to say or do so as to not to give a bad impression of ourselves or to jeopardize the relationship we have with others.
Overall, you have responded straight to the point in a clear and simple manner that can be understood by many .
Cheers,
Jo.
Hi Linh,
ReplyDeleteI like the flow of ideas in this post! You actually started off with explaining what effective communication is and then listing examples of how different choice of words could affect the tone projected.
I agree with you that effective communication is very important in a family. Misunderstandings usually occur when we fail to communicate with our family members, or it could just simply arise when we take the need to communicate for granted. No doubt our family members are the closest to us, they are just not us, so they wouldn't know what exactly we are thinking about/how we feel unless we communicate those feelings to them.
So communication makes them HEAR us, effective communication makes them FEEL us. :)
Cheers,
Alicia

This is a well-focused post, Lynn. You have done a great job answering the question posed, and you have shared relevant and interesting examples to support your discussion, keeping your readers' interest sustained. Good job.
ReplyDeleteA few suggestions how you can further sustain readers' interest:
1) Besides the written word, the ease of navigation is also an important area in online communication. Your blog must be easy to browse, allowing the visitor to obtain information with minimum effort. What about working on the width of your template in layout to minimise scrolling?
2) Check your font size to find out the most comfortable font size for reading.
3) Work on using colours to emphasize, not distract.
Can you find more ways to keep your readers coming back for more?
